Empowering GZU Medial Students with Lifesaving Stop the Bleed Skills

Steelmakers and Patel Foundation has partnered with the Great Zimbabwe University to train medical students on how to control bleeding. “By arming the 65 students with the knowledge and tools to act swiftly in times of crisis, we’re paving the way for a community that’s better prepared to face the unexpected, ultimately protecting lives.”

This exciting collaboration will set in motion a series of training capability within the ZGU  where students will acquire essential skills for responding to life-threatening situations and in supporting the Masvingo community outreach as part of the SkillsMakersProgram.

This initiative is set to revolutionize the way GZU medical students prepare and respond to emergencies, fostering a safer and more resilient community for all.

Dr Nirav Patel is also a qualified trainer in Trauma Education. He will impart his ACS trauma education course skills on addressing safety for the immediate management of injured patients. Lessons from the Battlefield: The Importance of Bleeding Control

The Stop the Bleed initiative highlights the lifesaving importance of bleeding control, drawing from lessons learned in military conflicts. Studies from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars confirmed the effectiveness of tourniquets, leading to their widespread adoption under Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) guidelines.

Subsequent research in 2014 demonstrated similar benefits for civilians, introducing direct pressure and wound packing as essential emergency techniques. The key takeaway: time is critical the faster bleeding is controlled, the greater the chance of survival.

Recognizing this, efforts have since focused on training bystanders, empowering them to act quickly and effectively in life-threatening situations.
